The Department for Culture Media and Sport in the UK has
warned that lack of exercise kills as many people as smoking.
And it found around a quarter of adults don’t even do 30
minutes exercise a week and said people should do more to improve their ‘weight
management’.
In the strategy paper, DCMS said: ‘Physical inactivity is a
hidden killer. It directly contributes to one in six deaths in the UK, the same
proportion as smoking. ‘It is the fourth largest cause of disease and
disability in the UK.
‘Around a quarter of people in England are classed as
inactive, failing to achieve a minimum of 30 minutes of activity a week.’
It said doing exercise or other physical activity can prevent
or treat physical and mental illnesses including cancer, heart disease,
strokes, dementia, depression and type two diabetes.
On older people, the document said it was particularly
important for older people to join in appropriate exercise to ‘keep them
healthy and both to prevent and alleviate the symptoms of age-related
conditions’.
Regular exercise can not only keep older hearts healthy but
strengthen joints, lift mood and help in the fight against more chronic long
term conditions such as strokes and cancer .
So be warned. If you can’t hit the gym, try to walk or a
little morning daily push-ups will not be a bad Idea
