A Shariah Court sitting at
Noman land in the Kano metropolis Wednesday sentenced a 63-year-old man to
death by stoning, for raping a 13-year-old girl and infecting her with HIV.
The accused, Ubale Sa'idu
Dotsa of Dotsa town, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, was accused
for luring and defiling the teenage girl last month, and infecting with HIV.
The convict said the
teenager paid him unnecessary visits at his shop on several occasions in the
night.
He said he was uncomfortable
with the visits and that a at point, he
forced her to leave his shop because he feared something wrong would happened
between them until the devil tempted him to have sexual intercourse with her.
The convict further revealed
that he was not aware of his HIV status, otherwise, he would not have had
anything to do with the teenager.
After the court registrar,
Uba Alasan Rimi, read the charges to the accused, he instantly pleaded guilty
and expressed regret for his action.
The presiding magistrate,
Faruk Ahmad, then sentenced the defendant to death by stoning for committing
adultery, since he is a married man.
In Shariah law, a married
person is stoned to death if convicted for adultery.
The magistrate then assigned
the registrar to write a letter to the state Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso,
for recommendation.
Speaking after the judgment,
the convict described the incident as fateful and pleaded for mercy from the
court and the government.
"This is a very sad
incident. She used to come to me in the night and I shunned her several times
and thereafter, the devil whispered to me that I should have sexual intercourse
with her.
I didn't know that I was HIV
positive. I beg for mercy from the court and the government. I really regret my
actions," he said.
