Childhood Sweethearts Forced Apart During WWII Set To Marry 70 Years Later

Here is a heart worming story of the phrase  "destiny can only be delayed, but it can never be denied".

It’s taken 70 years and a round-the-world trip but a couple separated as teenagers are finally to have their happy-ever-after.

Childhood sweethearts Bob Humphries, 89, and Bernie Bluett, 87, lost touch during World War II when her disapproving parents failed to pass on his letters.

He was 18 at the time and she was 17.

They went on to marry other people and Ms Bluett moved to New Zealand.

But the pair were reunited in 2011 thanks to Ms Bluett’s daughter and are due to tie the knot in Pawlett, near Bridgwater, Somerset, on Saturday, July 20, 2013.

Mr Humphries said Mrs Bluett had left an impression on him when they first met all those years ago.

He said: ‘When circumstances brought us closer together we finally got married after all these years. It has been quite stressful but I am looking forward to it.’

Mrs Bluett added: ‘When I saw him again I didn’t see an old man – I saw that young soldier. We both feel young at heart.’

Congrats young grannies!!!
